Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What causes tides?

    Model answer

The gravitational pull of the Moon, and to a lesser extent of the Sun, on the oceans, combined with the centrifugal effect of the rotating Earth and Moon system.

  2. 2

Why do most coasts experience two high tides each day?

    Model answer

One bulge of water is drawn towards the Moon and a second forms on the opposite side of the Earth, and the Earth rotates through both of them.

  3. 3

What is a spring tide, and when does it occur?

    Model answer

It is the tide of greatest range, occurring at new and full moon when the Sun and Moon are aligned and their gravitational pulls combine.

  4. 4

    What is a neap tide?

    Model answer

The tide of smallest range, occurring at the first and last quarter of the Moon when the Sun and Moon pull at right angles and partly cancel each other out.

  5. 5

How long is the interval between successive high tides on a semi-diurnal coast?

    Model answer

About twelve hours and twenty-five minutes.

  6. 6

How often does the cycle from spring tide to spring tide repeat?

    Model answer

About every fourteen days, so spring tides occur twice in each lunar month.
