Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is interception?

    Model answer

Interception is the capture of precipitation by vegetation, buildings or other surfaces before it reaches the ground.

  2. 2

Name the three fates of water intercepted by a tree canopy.

    Model answer

It evaporates straight back to the atmosphere, runs down the trunk as stemflow, or drips and drains to the ground as throughfall.

  3. 3

Why is interception loss greater under conifers than under bare deciduous trees in winter?

    Model answer

Conifers keep their needles all year, so they still present a large surface area to catch and evaporate rain in the months when broadleaved trees have lost their leaves.

  4. 4

    What is infiltration?

    Model answer

Infiltration is the movement of water from the ground surface downwards into the soil.

  5. 5

    What is infiltration capacity?

    Model answer

Infiltration capacity is the maximum rate at which a soil can absorb water, usually measured in millimetres per hour.

  6. 6

How is infiltration-excess overland flow generated?

    Model answer

When rainfall intensity exceeds the soil's infiltration capacity the surplus water cannot enter the soil, so it ponds and then flows across the surface.
