Links and interdependence between the water and carbon cycles
- 2 things to know
- Component 01
Overview
Recall questions on how the oceans, cryosphere, atmosphere and a single leaf link the two cycles, ocean acidification, plant water use under higher carbon dioxide, human use of carbon stores, a more intense water cycle as the climate warms, glacier-fed rivers, drought turning forest into a carbon source, and sea-level rise.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How do the oceans link the water and carbon cycles?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How do the oceans link the water and carbon cycles?
Model answer
Seawater is both the largest water store and the largest actively exchanging carbon store, and the same thermohaline circulation that moves heat and water also carries dissolved carbon into the deep ocean.
- 2
What is ocean acidification, and what causes it?
Model answer
Ocean acidification is the fall in seawater pH caused by dissolved carbon dioxide forming carbonic acid; surface pH has fallen by about 0.1 units since pre-industrial times.
- 3
Why does ocean acidification threaten the movement of carbon to the sea floor?
Model answer
More acidic water makes it harder for corals, molluscs and plankton to build calcium carbonate shells and can dissolve existing ones, so less carbonate sinks and is buried.
- 4
How are the two cycles linked at the scale of a single leaf?
Model answer
Stomata must open to admit carbon dioxide for photosynthesis, and water vapour escapes through the same pores, so carbon gain and water loss are inseparable.
- 5
What happens to a plant's water use when atmospheric carbon dioxide rises?
Model answer
The plant can take in the carbon dioxide it needs through narrower stomatal openings, so it transpires less for each unit of carbon fixed and its water use efficiency increases.
- 6
How does the cryosphere link the two cycles?
Model answer
Ice holds a large share of the world's freshwater and also caps a vast frozen carbon store in permafrost, so melting releases both water and greenhouse gases.
