Climate Change

Mitigation through energy efficiency, fuel shifts and low-carbon energy

  • 2 things to know
  • Component 03

Overview

Recall questions on mitigation, energy efficiency and conservation, home insulation and LEDs, combined heat and power, the rebound effect, coal-to-gas switching and its limits, wind, solar and nuclear power, falling solar costs, intermittency and grid solutions, objections to nuclear, and the difficulty of decarbonising heat and heavy industry.

What you need to know

Key term

Distinguish energy efficiency from energy conservation.

Key term

Roughly how much CO₂ is saved per unit of electricity by switching from coal to natural gas?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define mitigation.

    Model answer

Mitigation is action that reduces the sources of greenhouse gases or enhances the sinks that remove them, in order to limit the extent of climate change.

  2. 2

Distinguish energy efficiency from energy conservation.

    Model answer

Efficiency means obtaining the same service from less energy, while conservation means choosing to use less of the service itself.

  3. 3

Give two ways a home can be made more energy efficient.

    Model answer

A home can be insulated in the loft and cavity walls, and its old boiler can be replaced with a heat pump or a high-efficiency condensing boiler.

  4. 4

Why is replacing incandescent bulbs with LEDs an effective mitigation measure?

    Model answer

An LED delivers the same light for roughly a tenth of the electricity, and because lighting is used in every building the aggregate saving is very large.

  5. 5

What is combined heat and power?

    Model answer

It is a plant that captures the waste heat produced when electricity is generated and pipes it to buildings or industry, greatly raising the useful energy obtained from each unit of fuel.

  6. 6

    What is the rebound effect?

    Model answer

It is the tendency for efficiency savings to be partly cancelled out because lower running costs encourage people to use more of the service.
