Evaporation, transpiration, condensation and the causes of rainfall
- 3 things to know
- Component 01
Overview
Recall questions on evaporation and its controls, stomata and transpiration, condensation, dew point and condensation nuclei, the dry and saturated adiabatic lapse rates with a worked calculation, convectional, frontal and orographic rainfall, rain shadows, and how cloud droplets grow into rain.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is evaporation?
State three factors that control the rate of evaporation from an open water surface.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is evaporation?
Model answer
Evaporation is the change of state from liquid water to water vapour, which requires an input of latent heat.
- 2
State three factors that control the rate of evaporation from an open water surface.
Model answer
Temperature, the humidity of the air above the surface, and wind speed.
- 3
What role do stomata play in transpiration?
Model answer
Stomata open to let carbon dioxide into the leaf for photosynthesis, and water vapour escapes through the same pores, so transpiration is the unavoidable cost of taking in carbon.
- 4
Why does transpiration almost stop at night?
Model answer
Photosynthesis ceases without light, so most plants close their stomata and water loss from the leaves falls close to zero.
- 5
What is condensation?
Model answer
Condensation is the change of water vapour into liquid water, which occurs when air is cooled to its dew point or has enough vapour added to saturate it.
- 6
What is the dew point?
Model answer
The dew point is the temperature at which air becomes saturated, so that any further cooling forces water vapour to condense.
