Overview

Recall questions on how bays and headlands form, Handfast Point and Old Harry Rocks, how cliffs retreat from a wave-cut notch, shore platforms and their rock pools, bayhead beaches, bevelled cliffs, the role of subaerial weathering, and the retreat rate of the Holderness till cliffs.

How does a bay form on a discordant coast?

Key term

Why does a headland eventually begin to erode faster than the bay behind it?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How does a bay form on a discordant coast?

    Model answer

Waves cut back the bands of weaker rock faster than the resistant bands, so the weak rock is hollowed out into a bay between two projecting headlands.

  2. 2

Why does a headland eventually begin to erode faster than the bay behind it?

    Model answer

Once it projects into the sea, wave refraction concentrates energy on the headland while the bay beach absorbs energy, so the attack switches to the headland.

  3. 3

Which Dorset headland ends in the chalk stacks known as Old Harry Rocks?

    Model answer

Handfast Point, at the eastern end of the Purbeck chalk ridge near Studland.

  4. 4

    Define a cliff.

    Model answer

A steep or vertical rock face at the coast, formed where the land meets the sea and waves attack its base.

  5. 5

    What is a wave-cut notch?

    Model answer

A horizontal indentation cut into the base of a cliff between the high and low water marks, where wave erosion is concentrated.

  6. 6

    Describe how a cliff retreats.

    Model answer

Waves cut a notch at the base, the overhanging rock above eventually becomes unsupported and collapses, the debris is removed by the waves, and the process begins again on the new cliff face.
