Questions from this topic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define salah.

    Model answer

Salah is the formal ritual prayer of Islam, performed in Arabic at fixed times each day in a set sequence of words, postures and prostrations, facing the Ka'bah.

  2. 2

What does Qur'an 4:103 establish about prayer?

    Model answer

It states that prayer is an obligation on believers at appointed times, which is why salah is tied to fixed hours rather than left to personal choice.

  3. 3

Name the five daily prayers in order.

    Model answer

Fajr at dawn, Zuhr after midday, Asr in the afternoon, Maghrib just after sunset and Isha at night.

  4. 4

How do many Shi'a Muslims organise the five prayers differently?

    Model answer

Twelver Shi'a commonly combine Zuhr with Asr and Maghrib with Isha, so the five prayers are performed at three sittings, on the grounds that the Prophet did so without excuse of travel.

  5. 5

    What is a rak'ah?

    Model answer

A rak'ah is one complete unit of salah, made up of standing and recitation, bowing, standing again, and two prostrations with a sitting between them.

  6. 6

What purposes does salah serve for a Muslim?

    Model answer

It keeps God in mind through the whole working day, disciplines the believer into a shared pattern of life, and the Qur'an says that prayer restrains a person from indecency and wrongdoing.
