Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Give the case that atman and Brahman are simply identical.

    Model answer

The Upanishads declare the self to be Brahman outright, Shankara argues that any real difference would divide what is by definition one and infinite, and only identity makes liberation permanent rather than a state that could be lost.

  2. 2

Give the case that atman and Brahman must remain distinct.

    Model answer

Madhva argues that scripture repeatedly addresses God as another, that worship, grace and love make no sense between a thing and itself, and that the sheer fact of a soul's ignorance and suffering shows it is not the perfect being it claims to be.

  3. 3

Why do many Hindus find Ramanuja's position the strongest of the three?

    Model answer

Vishishtadvaita keeps the unity the Upanishads insist on by making souls the body of Brahman, while keeping the distinctness that devotion requires, so neither scripture nor worship has to be explained away.

  4. 4

Give the case that an impersonal God cannot be worshipped.

    Model answer

Worship involves praise, petition and love, all of which need someone to receive them, and a reality without qualities cannot be pictured, named or addressed, which is why saguna forms dominate Hindu practice.

  5. 5

Give the case that worship of an impersonal God is possible.

    Model answer

Meditation on Om, silent contemplation and the nirguna poetry of saints such as Kabir are all directed beyond form, and Advaita answers that images serve as a stage on the way to realisation rather than as its object.

  6. 6

Give the case that the Trimurti is central to Hindu understanding of God.

    Model answer

It holds together the three things Hindus say the divine does, it makes the cyclic view of time intelligible, and it lets the many deities of Hinduism be understood as aspects of one Saguna Brahman.
