Electric potential and potential energy
- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on defining potential and the energy of a charge pair, why zero sits at infinity, signs around a negative charge, work done moving a charge, and removing one to infinity.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Write the equation for the electric potential at a distance r from a point charge Q, and state its unit.
Write the equation for the electrical potential energy of two point charges a distance r apart.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define electric potential at a point.
Model answer
The electric potential at a point is the work done per unit positive charge in bringing a small test charge from infinity to that point.
- 2
Write the equation for the electric potential at a distance r from a point charge Q, and state its unit.
Model answer
The potential is V = kQ/r, measured in volts, where one volt is one joule per coulomb.
- 3
Why is electric potential taken to be zero at infinity?
Model answer
At an infinite distance the charge exerts no force, so no work is needed to move a test charge there, which makes it the natural zero of the potential scale.
- 4
Write the equation for the electrical potential energy of two point charges a distance r apart.
Model answer
The electrical potential energy is kQq/r, where Q and q are the two charges.
- 5
Calculate the electric potential 0.050 m from a point charge of 2.0 × 10⁻⁸ C.
Model answer
V = kQ/r = 8.98 × 10⁹ × 2.0 × 10⁻⁸ ÷ 0.050 = 3.6 × 10³ V.
- 6
Calculate the electrical potential energy of a charge of 3.0 × 10⁻⁹ C placed 0.050 m from a charge of 2.0 × 10⁻⁸ C.
Model answer
The potential energy is kQq/r = 8.98 × 10⁹ × 2.0 × 10⁻⁸ × 3.0 × 10⁻⁹ ÷ 0.050 = 1.1 × 10⁻⁵ J.
