Overview
Recall questions on light gates, ticker tape and video analysis, needing a known length in shot, air tracks and friction-compensated runways, and why a gate gives an average velocity.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How can a single light gate be used to measure the acceleration of a trolley?
How is acceleration found from a ticker tape?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How is a light gate used to measure the speed of a trolley?
Model answer
A card of measured length on the trolley interrupts the beam, and the speed is the length of the card divided by the time for which the beam is blocked.
- 2
How can a single light gate be used to measure the acceleration of a trolley?
Model answer
A card cut into two separate segments gives two speeds a short time apart, and the acceleration is the change in speed divided by the interval between them.
- 3
What does a ticker timer record?
Model answer
It prints dots on a tape at a fixed rate, usually fifty each second, so the dot spacings show the distance travelled in known intervals of time.
- 4
How is acceleration found from a ticker tape?
Model answer
The tape is cut into strips containing equal numbers of intervals; each strip length gives a velocity, and the steady increase in strip length gives the acceleration.
- 5
Why is a ticker timer less suitable than a light gate for measuring fast motion?
Model answer
At high speed the dots are widely spaced so few are printed, giving little data, and dragging the tape adds appreciable friction.
- 6
State one advantage of using a data logger rather than a stopwatch.
Model answer
A data logger records many readings each second automatically, which removes human reaction time from the measurement.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Space, Time and Motion, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
