Overview

Recall questions on reading a mean and its spread from a dot-plot, when a median is better, recognising and handling an outlier, scatter and pie charts, logarithmic scales, and uncertainty bars.

What you need to know

Answer each one before you reveal it.

Key term

Should an outlying value be removed, when is a logarithmic scale used, and how do uncertainty bars test a predicted relationship?

Key term

Five timings give 4.5, 4.7, 4.8, 4.6 and 4.9 s. State the mean and the uncertainty.

Key term

What can account for an outlying measured value?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What does a dot-plot of repeated measurements show?

    Model answer

It shows each measured value as a point on a single measurement axis, so the position of the group and the spread of the values are both visible at a glance.

  2. 2

How is the mean value estimated from a dot-plot?

    Model answer

It is estimated as the centre of the main cluster of points, which can then be confirmed by calculating the arithmetic mean.

  3. 3

When is the median a better summary of a set of readings than the mean?

    Model answer

When one or two values lie far from the rest, since the median is barely affected by them while the mean is dragged towards them.

  4. 4

How is the uncertainty in a mean estimated from the spread of a dot-plot?

    Model answer

It is taken as half the range of the values, that is half the difference between the largest and smallest readings, once any point excluded for a stated reason has been set aside.

  5. 5

Five timings give 4.5, 4.7, 4.8, 4.6 and 4.9 s. State the mean and the uncertainty.

    Model answer

The mean is 4.70 s and the uncertainty is half the range, which is ±0.2 s.

  6. 6

How is a potential outlier recognised on a dot-plot?

    Model answer

It sits clearly apart from the cluster formed by all the other points, separated by much more than the typical spacing within the group.
