  1. 1

Which two settings must be chosen on a multimeter before a reading is taken?

    Model answer

The function, such as direct current, potential difference or resistance, and the smallest range that will accommodate the expected value.

  2. 2

How is a multimeter connected to measure the current through a component?

    Model answer

The circuit is broken at that point and the meter is connected in series so that the whole current passes through it.

  3. 3

How is a multimeter connected to measure the potential difference across a component?

    Model answer

It is connected in parallel, with one lead to each end of the component.

  4. 4

Why must a component be disconnected from the supply before its resistance is measured with a multimeter?

    Model answer

The ohmmeter drives its own small current through the component to measure the resistance, and any current from the circuit supply would make the reading meaningless and could damage the meter.

  5. 5

Why does measuring the resistance of a resistor while it is still connected in a circuit give too low a value?

    Model answer

The other components in the circuit provide additional paths in parallel with it, so the meter measures the combined resistance of all of them.

  6. 6

What uncertainty is normally taken for a reading from a digital meter?

    Model answer

It is ±1 in the last displayed digit, unless the meter's stated tolerance is larger.
