Calipers and micrometers for small distances
- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on the resolution of micrometers and vernier calipers, reading a vernier scale, the micrometer ratchet, finding and correcting a zero error, internal jaws and the depth probe, measuring a wire's diameter and cross-sectional area and the percentage uncertainty in the area, over-tightening on soft objects, and the limited range of a micrometer.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
A micrometer reads −0.03 mm when closed and 2.47 mm on a wire. State the corrected diameter.
What are the internal jaws and the depth probe of a pair of calipers used to measure?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the resolution of a micrometer screw gauge?
Model answer
It reads to 0.01 mm.
- 2
What is the resolution of vernier calipers with a ten-division vernier scale?
Model answer
They read to 0.1 mm.
- 3
How is a reading taken from a vernier scale?
Model answer
The main scale value just before the zero of the vernier is read, then the vernier division that lines up exactly with a main scale division gives the extra fraction to be added.
- 4
On vernier calipers the zero of the vernier lies just past the 23 mm mark and the fourth vernier division coincides with a main scale mark. State the reading.
Model answer
The reading is 23.4 mm.
- 5
What is the purpose of the ratchet on a micrometer?
Model answer
It slips once a set contact force is reached, so every measurement is made with the same gentle pressure and the object is neither compressed nor the frame strained.
- 6
How is the zero error of a micrometer found?
Model answer
The jaws are closed gently on nothing using the ratchet and the reading is noted; any departure from zero is the zero error.
