Constructing and checking DC circuits
- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on checking a build against the diagram, components that must go the right way round, protecting the supply, a rheostat used as series resistor or potential divider, and tracing faults.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does an analogue ammeter show that it has been connected the wrong way round?
What faults should be looked for when a newly built circuit gives no reading?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How is a constructed circuit checked against its circuit diagram?
Model answer
Start at one terminal of the supply and trace the path component by component, comparing each junction and each branch with the diagram until the other terminal is reached.
- 2
Which components in a DC circuit must be connected the right way round?
Model answer
Diodes, light emitting diodes, electrolytic capacitors and analogue meters all have to be connected the right way round, as does the supply itself.
- 3
What can happen to an electrolytic capacitor connected the wrong way round?
Model answer
It can overheat, leak or burst, because its insulating layer is only maintained when the applied potential difference has the correct polarity.
- 4
Why is a light emitting diode always connected with a resistor in series?
Model answer
Its resistance falls sharply once it conducts, so without a series resistor to limit the current the LED would be destroyed.
- 5
How does an analogue ammeter show that it has been connected the wrong way round?
Model answer
The pointer is driven backwards below the zero mark instead of moving up the scale.
- 6
What faults should be looked for when a newly built circuit gives no reading?
Model answer
A lead not making contact in its terminal, a broken or faulty lead, a switch left open or a flat cell, and a meter set to the wrong function or an inappropriate range.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Use of Apparatus and Techniques, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
