Impulse and force–time graphs
- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on impulse and its unit, the area under a force–time graph, average force from it, two collisions of equal area, and a gas particle rebounding from a wall.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How is the impulse found when the force is not constant?
How is the average force obtained from a force–time graph?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by the impulse of a force?
Model answer
It is the product of the force and the time for which it acts, and it equals the change of momentum it produces.
- 2
Give the SI unit of impulse and an equivalent form of it.
Model answer
The unit is the newton second, N s, which is the same as kg m s⁻¹.
- 3
Is impulse a scalar or a vector quantity?
Model answer
It is a vector, acting in the same direction as the force that produces it.
- 4
In FΔt = Δp, what does Δp represent?
Model answer
It is the change of momentum of the object, its final momentum minus its initial momentum.
- 5
What does the area under a force–time graph represent?
Model answer
It represents the impulse delivered, and therefore the change of momentum produced.
- 6
How is the impulse found when the force is not constant?
Model answer
The area beneath the force–time curve is found, either by counting squares or by dividing the shape into simple areas.
