Investigating induction, flux density and transformers
- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on the e.m.f. from a magnet falling through a coil, data loggers, increasing and controlling the e.m.f., reading its peak, equal pulse areas, the slowed magnet, measuring flux density with a digital balance and B = Δmg/(IL), zeroing, reversing the current, alignment and length, graphing the readings, and testing transformer turns ratios.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is a data logger or oscilloscope used rather than a voltmeter when a magnet is dropped through a coil?
Name two variables that must be controlled in a falling-magnet induction experiment.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe how the e.m.f. induced by a falling magnet can be investigated in the laboratory.
Model answer
A coil of many turns is clamped vertically and connected to a data logger or oscilloscope, and a small bar magnet is dropped from a measured height down through the coil while the e.m.f. is recorded against time.
- 2
Why is a data logger or oscilloscope used rather than a voltmeter when a magnet is dropped through a coil?
Model answer
The e.m.f. lasts only a fraction of a second and changes sign, and a voltmeter cannot respond fast enough to show that variation.
- 3
In a falling-magnet experiment, how would you increase the size of the induced e.m.f.?
Model answer
Drop the magnet from a greater height so that it moves faster, use a stronger magnet, or use a coil with more turns.
- 4
Name two variables that must be controlled in a falling-magnet induction experiment.
Model answer
The same magnet must be used throughout and it must fall through the coil along the same axis each time.
- 5
State the main source of uncertainty in measuring the peak e.m.f. from a falling magnet.
Model answer
The main uncertainty is in reading the short peak from the trace, because the sampling interval of the logger may miss the true maximum.
- 6
How can a falling-magnet experiment be used to test that the flux linkage change on entry equals that on exit?
Model answer
The areas under the two opposite pulses are measured from the trace, and they should be equal because each represents the same change in flux linkage.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Electromagnetism, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
