Activation processes and the effect of temperature
- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on activation energy and why activated processes speed up sharply with temperature, evaporation and evaporative cooling, thermionic emission and hot cathodes, ionisation in stars, semiconductor and metal resistance, viscosity and cold engine oil, melting over a narrow range, and why refrigeration slows food spoiling.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain why the viscosity of a liquid falls as it is heated.
Name three processes that have an activation energy and state the energy step involved in each.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by an activation energy?
Model answer
It is the minimum energy a particle must acquire before a particular process can happen to it.
- 2
Why do processes with an activation energy speed up so sharply as the temperature rises?
Model answer
The fraction of particles holding the required energy follows e^(−E/kT), which grows very rapidly as T increases.
- 3
Explain why a liquid evaporates faster when it is warmed.
Model answer
More molecules have enough energy to break free of the attractions at the surface, because the Boltzmann factor for that escape energy is larger.
- 4
Why does evaporation cool the liquid that is left behind?
Model answer
It is the most energetic molecules that escape, so the average energy of those remaining falls.
- 5
What is thermionic emission?
Model answer
It is the release of electrons from the surface of a hot metal by those that gain enough energy to overcome the work function.
- 6
Explain why a thermionic cathode must be run at over a thousand kelvin.
Model answer
The work function is a few electronvolts, well over a hundred times kT at room temperature, so a very high temperature is needed before the Boltzmann factor becomes appreciable.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Matter: Hot or Cold, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
