Signal generators, oscilloscopes and generating waves
- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on what a signal generator supplies, the time-base and volts-per-division controls, reading frequency and peak voltage from a trace, and measuring wavelengths of sound, water waves and microwaves.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
A trace reaches 3.0 divisions above the centre line with the vertical sensitivity at 2.0 V per division. State the peak voltage.
A trace spans 6.0 divisions from its lowest to its highest point at 0.5 V per division. State the peak-to-peak and peak voltages.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does a signal generator supply to a circuit?
Model answer
It supplies an alternating output whose frequency, amplitude and waveform can each be set by the user.
- 2
What does the time-base control of an oscilloscope set?
Model answer
It sets the horizontal scale of the trace, in time per division.
- 3
What does the volts per division control of an oscilloscope set?
Model answer
It sets the vertical scale of the trace, so that a given number of divisions of vertical deflection corresponds to a known potential difference.
- 4
One complete cycle of a trace occupies 4.0 divisions with the time-base at 5.0 ms per division. Calculate the frequency of the signal.
Model answer
The period is 4.0 × 5.0 = 20 ms, so the frequency is 1 ÷ 0.020 = 50 Hz.
- 5
A trace reaches 3.0 divisions above the centre line with the vertical sensitivity at 2.0 V per division. State the peak voltage.
Model answer
The peak voltage is 3.0 × 2.0 = 6.0 V.
- 6
A trace spans 6.0 divisions from its lowest to its highest point at 0.5 V per division. State the peak-to-peak and peak voltages.
Model answer
The peak-to-peak voltage is 3.0 V and the peak voltage is 1.5 V.
