Investigating capacitor charge and discharge

  • 3 things to know
  • Components 01, 02 and 03

Overview

Recall questions on the circuit used, what is recorded against time, choosing components so a run can be hand-timed, the time constant from a logarithmic plot, and confirming exponential decay.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Describe a circuit that lets you charge and then discharge a capacitor through a fixed resistor.

    Model answer

A d.c. supply, resistor and capacitor are connected through a two-way switch, so one position charges the capacitor through the resistor and the other connects the charged capacitor across the resistor to discharge.

  2. 2

Which two quantities are recorded against time in a discharge experiment using meters?

    Model answer

The potential difference across the capacitor from a voltmeter and the current from an ammeter, each at a measured time.

  3. 3

Why must the voltmeter used across a discharging capacitor have a very high resistance?

    Model answer

A low-resistance voltmeter would provide an extra discharge path, making the measured time constant shorter than RC.

  4. 4

Give one advantage of using a data logger rather than a stopwatch and meter for this investigation.

    Model answer

It records many readings per second automatically, so fast discharges can be followed and human reaction time does not affect the timing.

  5. 5

How would you choose R and C so that a discharge can be timed by hand?

    Model answer

Choose values whose product gives a time constant of several seconds, for example 100 μF with 100 kΩ giving 10 s.

  6. 6

How is the time constant obtained from recorded potential difference and time data?

    Model answer

Find the time at which the potential difference has fallen to 37% of its initial value, or use a graph of ln V against t and take the reciprocal of the magnitude of the gradient.
