The diffraction grating
- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on what a diffraction grating is and why its maxima are sharp, nλ = d sin θ and the order of a maximum, slit spacing from lines per millimetre, angles and the highest observable order, zero-order and white-light spectra, resolving close wavelengths, finding the slit spacing with sodium light, parallel beams, and overlapping orders.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a diffraction grating?
Explain why a grating produces sharp bright maxima rather than broad fringes.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a diffraction grating?
Model answer
A diffraction grating is a plate ruled with very many equally spaced parallel lines or slits, which diffract the light passing through it.
- 2
Explain why a grating produces sharp bright maxima rather than broad fringes.
Model answer
Light from thousands of slits reinforces only where every path difference is a whole number of wavelengths, and a small change of angle puts the many contributions out of step so that they cancel completely.
- 3
State the grating equation and define each term in it.
Model answer
The equation is nλ = d sin θ, where n is the order, λ the wavelength, d the spacing between adjacent slits and θ the angle of the maximum from the straight-through direction.
- 4
What is meant by the order of a grating maximum?
Model answer
The order n is the number of whole wavelengths of path difference between light from adjacent slits.
- 5
A grating has 500 lines per millimetre. What is the spacing between adjacent slits?
Model answer
The spacing is d = 1.00 × 10⁻³/500 = 2.00 × 10⁻⁶ m.
- 6
Light of wavelength 600 nm meets a grating of slit spacing 2.00 × 10⁻⁶ m. Calculate the angle of the first-order maximum.
Model answer
sin θ = λ/d = 6.00 × 10⁻⁷ / 2.00 × 10⁻⁶ = 0.300, so the angle is 17.5°.
