Limitations and improvements
- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on distinguishing a limitation from a mistake, improving hand timing and small measurements, reducing heat loss and heating effects, data loggers, and why vague suggestions do not count.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
In an experiment to find the specific heat capacity of a metal block, energy is lost to the surroundings. Suggest two improvements.
A wire warms noticeably during a set of resistance measurements. Suggest an improvement.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the difference between a limitation of a procedure and a mistake by the experimenter?
Model answer
A limitation is built into the method or apparatus and affects every attempt, whereas a mistake is a one-off error that should simply be corrected and the reading taken again.
- 2
A student times oscillations by hand with a stopwatch. State the limitation and an improvement.
Model answer
Reaction time of about 0.2 s limits each timing, and using light gates connected to an electronic timer removes the experimenter from the timing altogether.
- 3
In an experiment to find the specific heat capacity of a metal block, energy is lost to the surroundings. Suggest two improvements.
Model answer
Lag the block with insulation and fit a lid, and start the heating below room temperature and finish an equal amount above it so the gains and losses tend to cancel.
- 4
An extension of only 2 mm is being measured with a metre rule. Suggest an improvement.
Model answer
Use a vernier scale or travelling microscope to read the extension, or use a much longer wire so that the extension itself is larger.
- 5
A wire warms noticeably during a set of resistance measurements. Suggest an improvement.
Model answer
Reduce the current using a larger series resistance, and switch the circuit on only for the moment each reading is taken so the wire has time to cool between readings.
- 6
How can parallax be removed when a scale is read?
Model answer
Use an instrument with a mirror scale, or fix a set square against the scale so the reading is taken at right angles to it.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Evaluation, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
