Polarisation of electromagnetic waves
- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on plane polarisation and why only transverse waves show it, polarising filters, rotating one of two filters and crossed polarisers, demonstrating polarisation with microwaves and a metal grille, unpolarised lamp light, polarising sunglasses, stressed plastic between crossed polarisers, and liquid crystal displays.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain why only transverse waves can be polarised.
Describe what is observed when unpolarised light passes through two polarising filters and one is slowly rotated.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does it mean to say a wave is plane polarised?
Model answer
Its oscillations are confined to a single direction, at right angles to the direction in which the wave travels.
- 2
Explain why only transverse waves can be polarised.
Model answer
A longitudinal wave oscillates along the direction of travel, so there is no choice of oscillation direction to restrict.
- 3
What does the fact that light can be polarised tell us about its nature?
Model answer
It shows that light is a transverse wave.
- 4
Describe what a polarising filter does to unpolarised light.
Model answer
It transmits only the component of the oscillation along its transmission axis, so the emerging light is plane polarised and about half as intense.
- 5
Describe what is observed when unpolarised light passes through two polarising filters and one is slowly rotated.
Model answer
The transmitted brightness rises and falls twice in each complete turn, reaching a maximum when the axes are parallel and near darkness when they are at right angles.
- 6
What is meant by crossed polarisers?
Model answer
Two polarising filters with their transmission axes at 90° to each other, which together block almost all the light.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Imaging and Signalling, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
