Internal resistance and e.m.f.
- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on the internal resistance of a source, terminal potential difference and lost volts, finding internal resistance from a graph, maximum power transfer, and why car batteries need very low internal resistance.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the relationship linking terminal potential difference, e.m.f., current and internal resistance.
A cell of e.m.f. 1.5 V and internal resistance 0.50 Ω is connected to a 2.5 Ω resistor. Calculate the current.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by the internal resistance of a source?
Model answer
It is the resistance of the materials inside the source itself, through which the current must also pass.
- 2
State the relationship linking terminal potential difference, e.m.f., current and internal resistance.
Model answer
V = ε − Ir, where Ir is the potential difference lost inside the source.
- 3
What are meant by the lost volts of a cell?
Model answer
They are the potential difference Ir across the internal resistance, the energy per coulomb dissipated inside the source.
- 4
A cell of e.m.f. 1.5 V and internal resistance 0.50 Ω is connected to a 2.5 Ω resistor. Calculate the current.
Model answer
I = 1.5/(2.5 + 0.50) = 0.50 A.
- 5
A cell of e.m.f. 1.5 V and internal resistance 0.50 Ω delivers a current of 0.50 A. Calculate its terminal potential difference.
Model answer
V = 1.5 − (0.50 × 0.50) = 1.25 V.
- 6
A battery of e.m.f. 9.0 V has a terminal potential difference of 8.4 V when supplying 1.5 A. Calculate its internal resistance.
Model answer
r = (9.0 − 8.4)/1.5 = 0.40 Ω.
