Overview
Recall questions on why a laser suits interference work, wavelength from double slits and gratings, data-logger sensors and sampling rate, correcting a count for background, and identifying radiation by absorbers.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Which three quantities must be measured to find the wavelength of light from a double-slit interference pattern?
Ten fringe spacings measure 21 mm on a screen 1.50 m from slits 0.45 mm apart. Calculate the wavelength of the light.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why is a laser used rather than a filament lamp when interference and diffraction are investigated?
Model answer
Its light is monochromatic and coherent and its beam is narrow and intense, so the fringes are sharp, widely separated and clearly visible.
- 2
Which three quantities must be measured to find the wavelength of light from a double-slit interference pattern?
Model answer
The fringe separation, the separation of the two slits and the distance from the slits to the screen.
- 3
Ten fringe spacings measure 21 mm on a screen 1.50 m from slits 0.45 mm apart. Calculate the wavelength of the light.
Model answer
The fringe separation is 2.1 mm, so λ = xs/D = (2.1 × 10⁻³ × 0.45 × 10⁻³) ÷ 1.50 = 6.3 × 10⁻⁷ m.
- 4
Why is the distance across ten fringes measured rather than the width of a single fringe?
Model answer
The uncertainty in locating the two ends of the measurement is the same either way, so spreading it across ten spacings divides the percentage uncertainty by ten.
- 5
A diffraction grating has 300 lines per millimetre and the first-order maximum for a laser is at 10.9°. Calculate the wavelength.
Model answer
The slit spacing is 1 ÷ 300 000 = 3.33 × 10⁻⁶ m, so λ = d sin θ = 3.33 × 10⁻⁶ × 0.189 = 6.3 × 10⁻⁷ m.
- 6
Give two reasons why a diffraction grating gives a more accurate wavelength than a double slit.
Model answer
The maxima are much sharper because many slits contribute, and they occur at large angles that can be measured with a small percentage uncertainty.
