Following instructions and recording observations
- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on reading a method through first, recording raw readings as taken, showing precision, keeping every repeat, what besides numbers belongs in a record, and noting method changes.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What should be done when a written instruction is ambiguous?
Why must a measurement be recorded at the moment it is taken?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why should the whole method be read before any apparatus is set up?
Model answer
So that the apparatus, quantities and order of steps are known in advance, and a later step that changes what must be measured early on is not missed.
- 2
What should be done when a written instruction is ambiguous?
Model answer
Clarify it before proceeding, and record the interpretation actually used so the account matches what was done.
- 3
Give an example of a step whose order matters, and explain why.
Model answer
A circuit must be fully connected and checked before the supply is switched on, because switching on first can pass an excessive current through a wrongly connected meter.
- 4
Why must a measurement be recorded at the moment it is taken?
Model answer
A remembered or later-copied value is easily changed or mistranscribed, and the conditions at the time cannot be reconstructed afterwards.
- 5
How should a raw reading be recorded so that its precision is clear?
Model answer
To the full resolution of the instrument, including trailing zeros, and with the same number of decimal places as every other reading in that column.
- 6
What should be recorded about an instrument before it is used to take readings?
Model answer
Its resolution and any zero error, together with which instrument it was if more than one of the same kind is in use.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Practical Skills, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
