Timing and methods that increase accuracy
- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on timing many oscillations, the marker used when timing a swing, reaction time in hand timing, set squares and plumb lines, and light gates with interrupt cards.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
A pendulum completes 25 oscillations in 30.5 s. Calculate its period.
Why is the fiducial marker placed at the centre of the swing rather than at the extreme of the motion?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why is a large number of oscillations timed rather than a single one?
Model answer
The uncertainty from starting and stopping the clock is the same however many oscillations are timed, so dividing the total by the number of oscillations divides that uncertainty by the same factor.
- 2
A pendulum completes 25 oscillations in 30.5 s. Calculate its period.
Model answer
The period is 30.5 ÷ 25 = 1.22 s.
- 3
What is a fiducial marker and where should it be placed for a swinging pendulum?
Model answer
It is a fixed reference mark against which the passage of the bob is judged, and it is placed at the centre of the swing.
- 4
Why is the fiducial marker placed at the centre of the swing rather than at the extreme of the motion?
Model answer
The bob moves fastest at the centre, so it passes the mark in the shortest time and the instant of passing can be judged most sharply; at the extremes the bob is almost stationary and the moment of turning is hard to identify.
- 5
How does a set square improve the accuracy of a measurement?
Model answer
It is placed with one edge along the bench or scale so the other edge is exactly perpendicular, which allows a height or a position to be transferred to the scale without tilting or parallax.
- 6
How is a plumb line used in a practical measurement?
Model answer
A mass hanging on a thread settles along the true vertical, so the line marks the vertical through a point and lets a vertical distance or the equilibrium position of a pendulum be located accurately.

Every question in Use of Apparatus and Techniques, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
