Identifying and controlling variables
- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on independent, dependent, control and confounding variables, why only one variable is changed at a time, the variables to control in resistance, pendulum, spring, light intensity and gas pressure experiments, keeping a wire's temperature constant, showing a control variable stayed constant, and monitoring variables that cannot be controlled.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
A student investigates how the resistance of a wire depends on its length. Name two variables that must be controlled.
An experiment measures how the period of a simple pendulum depends on its length. State two control variables.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the independent variable in an investigation?
Model answer
It is the quantity the experimenter deliberately changes in order to see what effect it has.
- 2
What is the dependent variable in an investigation?
Model answer
It is the quantity that is measured to see how it responds when the independent variable is changed.
- 3
Define a control variable.
Model answer
A control variable is a quantity that could affect the dependent variable and is therefore deliberately kept constant throughout the experiment.
- 4
Why must only one variable be changed at a time?
Model answer
If two quantities change together, any change in the result cannot be attributed to either one of them, so no valid conclusion can be drawn.
- 5
A student investigates how the resistance of a wire depends on its length. Name two variables that must be controlled.
Model answer
The diameter and material of the wire must be the same throughout, and the temperature of the wire must be kept constant.
- 6
How is the temperature of a wire kept constant during a resistance experiment?
Model answer
The current is kept small and the circuit is switched on only while each reading is taken, so that little heating occurs between readings.

Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Planning, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
