Overview
Recall questions on setting up the calculation for a mass on a spring, the starting conditions needed, recalculating acceleration each step, errors from too large a step, energy checks, and damping.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
A 0.50 kg mass on a spring of stiffness 8.0 N m⁻¹ is released from a displacement of 0.10 m. What is its initial acceleration?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How is a step-by-step model of a mass on a spring built?
Model answer
From the present displacement the acceleration is found as −(k/m)x, the velocity is updated by aΔt, the displacement is updated by vΔt, and the cycle repeats.
- 2
What equation of motion does a numerical model of a mass–spring oscillator solve?
Model answer
It solves d²x/dt² = −(k/m)x.
- 3
A 0.50 kg mass on a spring of stiffness 8.0 N m⁻¹ is released from a displacement of 0.10 m. What is its initial acceleration?
Model answer
a = −(k/m)x = −(8.0/0.50) × 0.10 = −1.6 m s⁻², directed back towards equilibrium.
- 4
An oscillator released from rest has an acceleration of −1.6 m s⁻². What is its velocity after one time step of 0.010 s?
Model answer
Δv = aΔt = −1.6 × 0.010 = −0.016 m s⁻¹, so the velocity is −0.016 m s⁻¹.
- 5
A modelled oscillator at x = 0.100 m has velocity −0.016 m s⁻¹. What is its displacement after a further step of 0.010 s?
Model answer
Δx = vΔt = −0.016 × 0.010 = −1.6 × 10⁻⁴ m, so the displacement becomes 0.0998 m.
- 6
Why must the acceleration be recalculated at every step of the model?
Model answer
The acceleration depends on the displacement, which changes continuously, so a fixed value would not describe the motion.
