Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

List the six points of the People's Charter.

    Model answer

The Charter demanded universal manhood suffrage, the secret ballot, annual parliaments, equal electoral districts, payment of members and the abolition of the property qualification for members.

  2. 2

Why was payment of members included?

    Model answer

Without a salary only men of independent means could serve, so payment was necessary if working men were ever to sit in the Commons.

  3. 3

Why was the secret ballot demanded?

    Model answer

Open voting exposed tenants and workmen to intimidation by landlords and employers, so the ballot was the guarantee that a widened franchise would be real.

  4. 4

Which of the six points has never been enacted?

    Model answer

Annual parliaments have never been adopted; the other five eventually became law.

  5. 5

    Who was William Lovett?

    Model answer

Lovett was a London cabinet-maker who founded the London Working Men's Association and drafted the Charter with the help of the radical tailor Francis Place.

  6. 6

    Summarise Lovett's strategy.

    Model answer

Lovett believed in moral force: education, temperance, self-improvement and peaceful petitioning would prove working men fit for the vote and win middle-class allies.
