Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Who coined the phrase mutilated victory, and what did it mean?
Model answer
Gabriele D'Annunzio coined the phrase vittoria mutilata in 1918 to argue that Italy had won the war but been cheated of its rewards by its own allies.
- 2
Who represented Italy at the Paris Peace Conference?
Model answer
Prime Minister Vittorio Emanuele Orlando and Foreign Minister Sidney Sonnino represented Italy, with Orlando handicapped by his poor English and Sonnino by his rigid insistence on the letter of the Treaty of London.
- 3
Why did President Wilson oppose Italy's claims?
Model answer
Wilson rejected the Treaty of London as exactly the kind of secret bargain he had come to abolish, and held that Dalmatia's largely Slav population should go to the new Yugoslav state under the principle of self-determination.
- 4
Why was Italy's case over Fiume inconsistent?
Model answer
Italy claimed Dalmatia by treaty although its population was Slav, and claimed Fiume by nationality although the treaty had specifically excluded it, so Italy invoked whichever principle suited each demand.
- 5
What did Wilson do in April 1919?
Model answer
Wilson published an appeal over the heads of the Italian government directly to the Italian people, which enraged Italian opinion and made any compromise politically impossible for Orlando.
- 6
What was the result of Orlando's walkout from the conference?
Model answer
Orlando left Paris in protest in April 1919 and returned some days later having gained nothing, his bluff called, and his government fell in June.
