  1. 1

How had Hitler come to lead the party by 1921?

    Model answer

Hitler joined Drexler's German Workers' Party in 1919, helped rename it the National Socialist German Workers' Party and launch its twenty-five point programme in 1920, and took the leadership with dictatorial powers in July 1921.

  2. 2

Describe the Munich Beer Hall Putsch.

    Model answer

On the evening of 8 November 1923 Hitler broke into a meeting in the Bürgerbräukeller and forced the Bavarian leaders to declare a national revolution, but they withdrew their support overnight and a march into the centre of Munich the next day was stopped by police fire.

  3. 3

    Why did the putsch fail?

    Model answer

Kahr, Lossow and Seisser repudiated their promises as soon as they were free of the beer hall, the army and police stayed loyal, and no rising followed elsewhere in Germany.

  4. 4

What was the outcome of Hitler's trial?

    Model answer

Hitler used the trial in 1924 to attack the republic in speeches reported across Germany, and a sympathetic court gave him the minimum sentence of five years, of which he served nine months.

  5. 5

State what Hitler produced during his imprisonment.

    Model answer

Hitler dictated Mein Kampf at Landsberg, setting out his ideas on race, living space in the east, the leadership principle and the destruction of Marxism.

  6. 6

What lesson did Hitler draw from the failure of the putsch?

    Model answer

Hitler concluded that power had to be won by legal means, so the party would have to contest elections and build mass support rather than attempt another armed rising.
