Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
When was the Battle of Aughrim fought?
Model answer
The Battle of Aughrim was fought in County Galway on 12 July 1691 by the calendar then in use, twelve days after the fall of Athlone.
- 2
Why did St Ruth choose to fight at Aughrim?
Model answer
St Ruth needed a victory to restore his reputation after losing Athlone, and Kilcommadan Hill offered a strong position with soft bog across the whole front that would break up any frontal attack.
- 3
Describe the ground at Aughrim.
Model answer
The Jacobite army held a ridge behind a stretch of bog, with the approach on their left running along a narrow causeway past Aughrim castle and the approach on their right through a pass at Urraghry, so both flanks depended on holding a defile.
- 4
How large were the armies at Aughrim?
Model answer
Each army numbered something over twenty thousand men, making it the largest battle ever fought on Irish soil.
- 5
How did the battle go in its early stages?
Model answer
Ginkel's infantry attacked across the bog in the late afternoon and were thrown back with heavy loss by Jacobite counter-attacks, and for a time St Ruth believed the day was won.
- 6
What went wrong at Aughrim castle?
Model answer
The narrow causeway on the Jacobite left was held by too few men, and the defenders in the castle found their spare ammunition would not fit their muskets, so Williamite cavalry were able to force the pass.
