What had Sinn Féin been before 1916?
Model answer
Sinn Féin was Arthur Griffith's small movement advocating abstention from Westminster and a dual monarchy on the Austro-Hungarian model, not a republic.
- 2
Why was the Rising called the Sinn Féin rebellion?
Model answer
The press and the authorities wrongly attributed it to Sinn Féin, and the name attached itself to the whole separatist movement.

Model answer
At its convention in October 1917 the party adopted the aim of an Irish republic and elected Éamon de Valera as president, uniting the separatist strands under one organisation.
- 4
Which by-elections signalled the shift in opinion?
Model answer
Sinn Féin candidates won North Roscommon, South Longford, East Clare and Kilkenny City during 1917, defeating the Irish Party in seats it had long held.

What was the Irish Convention?
Model answer
The Convention of 1917 to 1918 brought Irish interests together to seek a settlement, but Sinn Féin boycotted it and Ulster Unionists would concede nothing, so it failed.
- 6
What was the conscription crisis of 1918?
Model answer
The government passed an Act extending conscription to Ireland, which united Sinn Féin, the Irish Party, the trade unions and the Catholic hierarchy in opposition.
