Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
On what did Mary, Queen of Scots base her claim to the English throne?
Model answer
Mary, Queen of Scots was the granddaughter of Margaret Tudor, Henry VIII's elder sister, which made her the senior descendant of Henry VII outside Henry VIII's own children.
- 2
How did Henry VIII's will affect Mary's claim?
Model answer
Henry VIII's will, given force by statute, passed over the Scottish line in favour of the descendants of his younger sister Mary, so Mary Stuart's claim rested on hereditary right against an English statute.
- 3
Why did Mary, Queen of Scots flee to England in 1568?
Model answer
Mary was forced to abdicate in 1567 after the murder of Darnley and her marriage to Bothwell, and after her supporters were defeated at Langside in May 1568 she crossed into England expecting Elizabeth I's help.
- 4
What was the conference held at York and Westminster in 1568–69?
Model answer
The conference was an enquiry into the Scottish lords' charges against Mary, at which the casket letters were produced as evidence of her part in Darnley's murder, and it ended with no verdict either way.
- 5
Why could Elizabeth I neither restore nor release Mary?
Model answer
Restoring Mary would have overturned the friendly Protestant regime in Scotland, and releasing her to France or Spain would have handed a Catholic claimant to England's enemies.
- 6
Where and by whom was Mary held?
Model answer
Mary was kept for most of her captivity in the custody of the Earl of Shrewsbury, moving between houses including Tutbury, Sheffield and finally Chartley and Fotheringhay.
