Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How long was England at war between 1689 and 1714?
Model answer
England fought the Nine Years' War from 1689 to 1697 and the War of the Spanish Succession from 1702 to 1713, so roughly nineteen of twenty-five years.
- 2
Why did continuous war transform Parliament's position?
Model answer
War cost sums no prerogative revenue could approach, so the Commons met annually, voted supply annually and audited how it was spent.
- 3
What was the Bank of England, and when was it founded?
Model answer
The Bank of England was founded in 1694 as a joint-stock company that lent its capital to the government in return for the right to issue notes and a guaranteed interest.
- 4
Why was the Bank a constitutional as well as a financial innovation?
Model answer
Its loans were secured on taxes voted by Parliament, so the national debt was owed by the state rather than the monarch and could not be repudiated by a king.
- 5
What is meant by the financial revolution?
Model answer
It describes the creation between 1688 and 1714 of a permanent funded national debt, the Bank, a market in government securities and a land tax capable of servicing them.
- 6
What was the land tax, and why did it matter politically?
Model answer
The land tax was an annual levy on landed income voted by Parliament, and because it fell on the gentry it made them insist on scrutinising expenditure.
