Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why did Piedmont become the focus of national hopes after 1849?
Model answer
Piedmont alone kept the constitution granted in 1848, sheltered exiles from the other states, and possessed the only substantial Italian army.
- 2
What kind of politician was Cavour?
Model answer
Cavour was a Piedmontese noble and improving landowner who admired British parliamentary government and free trade, and he built a working majority in 1852 through the connubio, an alliance of centre-right and centre-left that carried him into office as prime minister.
- 3
State what the Siccardi Laws did.
Model answer
The Siccardi Laws of 1850 abolished the separate church courts and clerical privileges in Piedmont and began a long quarrel between the state and the papacy.
- 4
Describe Cavour's economic policy.
Model answer
Cavour signed free-trade treaties with Britain, France and Belgium, reformed banking and credit, and invested heavily in the port of Genoa and in railways, so that Piedmont held the largest network in the peninsula and had begun the tunnel under Mont Cenis, all at the cost of higher taxes and heavy borrowing.
- 5
Why did Piedmont join the Crimean War?
Model answer
Cavour sent an expeditionary force to the Crimea in 1855 to earn the friendship of Britain and France and a place among the great powers.
- 6
What did Piedmont gain at the Congress of Paris in 1856?
Model answer
Piedmont gained no territory, but Cavour was able to denounce Austrian rule and misgovernment in Italy before the assembled powers and so turn the Italian question into a European one.
