Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What was distraint of knighthood?
Model answer
Distraint of knighthood was the revival of an obligation on men with land worth £40 a year to be knighted at a coronation, and fines were levied on those who had not been.
- 2
Why was distraint of knighthood resented if it was legal?
Model answer
It was a medieval obligation revived purely to raise money, and it fined men for failing to do something no one had asked them to do.
- 3
What were forest fines?
Model answer
The boundaries of the royal forests were re-established at their medieval extent and landowners inside them were fined for encroachment.
- 4
What was Ship Money?
Model answer
Ship Money was a levy traditionally taken from coastal towns for naval defence in an emergency, which Charles extended to inland counties and collected annually from 1635.
- 5
Why was extending Ship Money inland so significant?
Model answer
Extending it inland and levying it every year in peacetime turned an emergency coastal charge into what looked like a permanent land tax without consent.
- 6
How successful was Ship Money as a revenue measure?
Model answer
It was remarkably successful at first, yielding around £200,000 a year with collection rates above ninety per cent in its early years.
