- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1

What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How did the Repeal campaign of 1843 differ in scale from anything before it?
Why did the government treat Repeal differently from Emancipation?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What was O'Connell's political strategy in the 1830s?
Model answer
O'Connell judged that Repeal was unattainable for the moment and used his small group of Irish members to keep a Whig government in office in return for practical reform in Ireland.
- 2
What was agreed at Lichfield House in 1835?
Model answer
The Whigs, the Radicals and O'Connell's members agreed to combine to remove Peel's minority government, and O'Connell suspended his agitation for Repeal in return for reform and a share of Irish patronage.
- 3
What did the Whig alliance actually deliver?
Model answer
Catholics were appointed to the magistracy and the public service, the constabulary was reformed, the tithe was converted to a rent charge in 1838, and the municipal corporations were opened in 1840.
- 4
What did the alliance fail to deliver?
Model answer
Appropriation of Church revenues was abandoned, the Poor Law of 1838 imposed a workhouse system O'Connell disliked, and nothing at all was done about the land.
- 5
How did O'Connell's aim in the 1840s differ from separatist republicanism?
Model answer
Repeal meant restoring a parliament in Dublin for Irish affairs while keeping the Crown and the imperial connection, so O'Connell was asking for self-government within the Empire and not for the separation that Tone and Emmet had sought.
- 6
How did the Repeal campaign of 1843 differ in scale from anything before it?
Model answer
The monster meetings assembled crowds of a hundred thousand and more in complete order, and the Repeal rent and the wardens organised the country parish by parish, so the movement was larger and better disciplined than the Emancipation campaign.
