Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How prepared was the German economy for a long war in 1939?
Model answer
Rearmament had been broad rather than deep, stocks of oil, rubber and food were small, and the economy was geared to short campaigns rather than to years of attrition.
- 2
Explain the argument that Germany fought a blitzkrieg economy.
Model answer
Some historians argued that Germany deliberately kept civilian production high and mobilised only in width, planning short wars so that living standards need not be cut.
- 3
What is the case against the blitzkrieg economy interpretation?
Model answer
Later work showed that Germany was already spending a very large share of national income on the military before 1942, and that the real problem was inefficiency, competing agencies and craft production rather than deliberate restraint.
- 4
Outline Todt's work as Minister of Armaments.
Model answer
Todt was appointed in 1940 to coordinate munitions production, and his Organisation Todt built military roads, the western defences and later the Atlantic Wall using conscripted and forced labour.
- 5
How did Speer come to succeed Todt?
Model answer
Todt was killed in an air crash in February 1942 and Hitler immediately appointed his architect Speer in his place.
- 6
Describe Speer's method of raising output.
Model answer
Speer set up a central planning board and handed day-to-day control to committees of industrialists, cutting the number of designs, standardising components and concentrating long production runs in the most efficient plants.
