Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What was the Rome–Berlin Axis?
Model answer
The Rome–Berlin Axis was the understanding reached in October 1936, after Ciano's visit to Berlin, that Italy and Germany would co-ordinate their policies, and Mussolini announced it in a Milan speech in which he described the line between the two capitals as an axis.
- 2
Why did Italy join the Anti-Comintern Pact, and what followed?
Model answer
Italy joined Germany and Japan in the Anti-Comintern Pact in November 1937 to formalise the new alignment and dress it as a crusade against communism, and a month later Italy withdrew from the League of Nations altogether.
- 3
How did Mussolini react to the Anschluss?
Model answer
Mussolini accepted the German annexation of Austria in March 1938 without protest, abandoning the position he had defended at the Brenner four years earlier, and Hitler's effusive gratitude was poor compensation for a German army on the Alpine frontier.
- 4
What was Mussolini's role at Munich?
Model answer
Mussolini presented himself as the mediator who saved the peace at Munich in September 1938, and the reception he received on his return marked the last moment at which he appeared to hold the balance between Germany and the west.
- 5
Why did Italy invade Albania in April 1939?
Model answer
Mussolini needed a conquest of his own to set beside Germany's seizure of Prague, so Italian forces occupied Albania in April 1939 and Victor Emmanuel III took the Albanian crown, formalising a domination Italy had exercised for a decade.
- 6
What was the Pact of Steel?
Model answer
The Pact of Steel, signed in May 1939, was a full offensive alliance under which each party undertook to support the other with all its forces in any war, whether or not that war was defensive.
