Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What organisation did Southern Unionists form in 1885?
Model answer
Southern Unionists founded the Irish Loyal and Patriotic Union in 1885. The body was reconstituted in 1891 as the Irish Unionist Alliance.
- 2
What were the motives of Southern Unionists?
Model answer
Southern Unionists were defending property and social position against agrarian legislation, believed their prosperity and safety depended on the imperial connection, and feared the political dominance of a Catholic majority.
- 3
What methods did Southern Unionists use?
Model answer
Lacking numbers, they worked by propaganda in Britain, by financing candidates and pamphlets, by influence in the House of Lords and among British Conservatives, and by contesting the few seats they could win.
- 4
Why could Southern Unionists never resist Home Rule in the way Ulster could?
Model answer
Southern Unionists were a scattered minority of about a tenth of the population of the three southern provinces, with no concentrated territory and no popular organisation, so they could persuade but never threaten.
- 5
What organisations did Ulster Unionists build after 1885?
Model answer
Ulster Unionists formed the Ulster Loyalist Anti-Repeal Union in 1886 and the Ulster Defence Union in 1893, and used the revived Orange Order as a ready-made network of lodges in every district.
- 6
What was the Ulster Unionist Convention of 1892?
Model answer
Thousands of delegates from every part of the province met in a purpose-built hall in Belfast in June 1892 and pledged themselves to refuse obedience to a Dublin parliament, which demonstrated the scale and discipline of Ulster opposition.
