How did Mussolini's own conduct of the war weaken Italy?
How did the war affect ordinary Italians at home?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How weak was Italian industry compared with the other combatants?
Model answer
Italy produced little more than two million tonnes of steel a year against Germany's twenty and Britain's thirteen, had no domestic oil, coal or rubber, and depended on imports that the Royal Navy could cut off.
- 2
Why was the Italian army so poorly equipped in 1940?
Model answer
Much of the artillery dated from the First World War, the tanks were thinly armoured and under-gunned, there was no radar and little motor transport, and the campaigns in Abyssinia, Libya and Spain had already consumed the stocks that should have equipped a modern army.
- 3
Why did the Italian navy underperform?
Model answer
The fleet was fast and modern in some respects but had no aircraft carriers, no effective naval air co-operation and no radar, and above all it lacked the fuel oil to keep the fleet at sea.
- 4
How did Mussolini's own conduct of the war weaken Italy?
Model answer
Mussolini took the supreme command himself, made strategic decisions for political effect, accepted inflated production and readiness figures from officials who feared to contradict him, and refused to integrate planning with Germany until Italy had already lost the initiative.
- 5
What happened when Italy invaded Greece?
Model answer
Italy attacked Greece from Albania on 28 October 1940 without informing Germany, and the Greeks not only halted the offensive but drove the Italians back deep into Albania, where the front stuck until German intervention in April 1941.
- 6
What happened at Taranto?
Model answer
British carrier aircraft attacked the Italian fleet at anchor at Taranto in November 1940 and disabled three battleships in a single night, transforming the naval balance in the Mediterranean.
