Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What did O'Connell mean by Repeal?

    Model answer

Repeal meant undoing the Act of Union and restoring a parliament in Dublin, with Ireland remaining under the Crown and within the Empire, so it was a demand for self-government and not for separation.

  2. 2

Give two of O'Connell's arguments against the Union.

    Model answer

O'Connell argued that the Union had been carried by bribery and was therefore not morally binding, and that only an Irish parliament would legislate for Irish conditions of land, poverty and religion.

  3. 3

What economic case did the Repealers make against the Union?

    Model answer

Repealers pointed to the decay of Dublin, the flight of absentee rents to England, the collapse of Irish industry outside the north-east and the burden of Irish taxation as the fruits of the Union.

  4. 4

When was the Loyal National Repeal Association founded?

    Model answer

O'Connell founded the Loyal National Repeal Association in April 1840.

  5. 5

How was the Repeal movement financed?

    Model answer

The Repeal rent copied the Catholic rent, with small subscriptions gathered by wardens and priests at chapel doors across the country.

  6. 6

What were the Repeal arbitration courts?

    Model answer

Repeal wardens set up local courts of arbitration to settle disputes, so that people would take their business away from the state's courts and accept an Irish authority instead.
