Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which divisions did Giolitti set out to overcome?
Model answer
Giolitti set out to reconcile the industrial working class and the Catholic population to a Liberal state from which both had been excluded, and to narrow the gulf between the industrialising north and the impoverished south.
- 2
What was Giolitti's approach to strikes and trade unions?
Model answer
Giolitti held that the state should stay neutral in industrial disputes rather than send troops against strikers, and he allowed unions to organise and to bargain in the belief that legal channels would tame the labour movement.
- 3
Name three social reforms of the Giolittian period.
Model answer
Giolitti's governments restricted the employment of women and children, extended industrial accident insurance and introduced maternity and old age funds, alongside laws on public health and hours of work.
- 4
What major industries were taken into state hands?
Model answer
The railways were nationalised in 1905 and life insurance in 1912, both intended to give the state control of key services and a source of revenue.
- 5
What did Giolitti do for the south?
Model answer
Giolitti passed special laws directing public works and tax relief to Basilicata and Calabria and organised relief after the Messina earthquake of 1908, but the sums involved were small beside the scale of southern poverty.
- 6
How did the franchise change in 1912?
Model answer
Giolitti introduced near-universal male suffrage in 1912, which raised the electorate from about three million to roughly eight and a half million at a stroke.
