- 1
When did James II's Irish Parliament meet, and what was its composition?
Model answer
The Parliament met in Dublin from May to July 1689 and was overwhelmingly Catholic, since the remodelled corporations and Catholic sheriffs had returned Catholic members for almost every seat.
- 2
Where does the name Patriot Parliament come from?
Model answer
The name was not used at the time and was given to the assembly by the nationalist writer Thomas Davis in the 1840s, so it carries a nineteenth-century judgement about what the Parliament represented.
- 3
What did the Parliament do about the land settlement?
Model answer
The Parliament repealed the Acts of Settlement and Explanation, which would have restored to Catholic proprietors the estates they had held before the wars of the 1640s.
- 4
What was the Act of Attainder?
Model answer
The Act of Attainder named some two thousand Protestants as traitors unless they submitted by a fixed date, on pain of death and forfeiture of their estates, and the sheer length of the list became the most effective propaganda the Williamites had.
- 5
What did the Act for Liberty of Conscience provide?
Model answer
The Act granted freedom of worship and provided that tithes should be paid by each person to the clergy of their own church, which ended the established church's claim on the whole population without setting up a Catholic establishment in its place.
- 6
What did the Parliament declare about the English Parliament's authority?
Model answer
The Parliament declared that the Parliament of England had no right to make laws binding Ireland, asserting that Ireland was a distinct kingdom under the same crown.
