Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What happened to the urban population during the 1930s?
Model answer
The towns grew explosively as peasants fled the collective farms, and Moscow's population roughly doubled between the late 1920s and the middle of the decade.
- 2
Describe housing conditions for the new industrial workers.
Model answer
Building could not keep pace with the influx, so families lived one to a room in shared flats, in wooden barracks or in mud huts on the edge of the construction sites.
- 3
What happened to food supply in the towns in the early 1930s?
Model answer
Rationing was reintroduced in 1929 and lasted until 1935, and meat, fats and bread were scarce and dear throughout the First Five Year Plan.
- 4
How did the position of women in the workforce change?
Model answer
Millions of women entered industry during the plans, making up around two fifths of the industrial workforce by 1940, while still carrying the housework and childcare at home.
- 5
What provision was made for the children of working mothers?
Model answer
Crèches and nurseries were built at factories and collective farms, though never in the numbers needed, and grandmothers carried much of the burden.
- 6
How were workers tied to their jobs?
Model answer
Internal passports were introduced in December 1932 and labour books in December 1938, so a worker could not move or take new employment without official permission.
