Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Where did the Jacobite army regroup after the Boyne?
Model answer
The Jacobite army fell back behind the river Shannon, holding Limerick, Athlone and Galway, so the war became a struggle for the crossings into Connacht and the west.
- 2
What did the French commanders advise after the Boyne?
Model answer
Lauzun and the French officers judged Limerick indefensible and advised surrender, and their withdrawal of support left the defence to Irish commanders under Patrick Sarsfield.
- 3
What was Sarsfield's raid on Ballyneety?
Model answer
In August 1690 Patrick Sarsfield led a cavalry force around the Williamite army and destroyed William's siege train at Ballyneety in County Limerick, blowing up the heavy guns and ammunition that were to have breached the walls.
- 4
What was the effect of the Ballyneety raid?
Model answer
The loss of the siege train forced William to attack before proper breaching artillery could be replaced, and it made Sarsfield the outstanding figure of the Jacobite war.
- 5
What happened at the assault on Limerick in August 1690?
Model answer
William's troops stormed a breach at the Black Battery on 27 August 1690, were driven back with heavy loss in fierce street fighting in which the townspeople joined, and the siege was raised at the end of the month.
- 6
What did William do after the failure at Limerick?
Model answer
William left Ireland in September 1690, leaving the command to his generals, because the war against France in Flanders was the more important theatre for him.
