Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What was Lenin's Testament?

    Model answer

Lenin's Testament was a set of notes dictated in December 1922 which assessed the leading Bolsheviks and found serious fault with every one of them.

  2. 2

What did the postscript to the Testament say about Stalin?

    Model answer

In a postscript of January 1923 Lenin called Stalin too rude to hold such power and urged the party to find a way of removing him as General Secretary.

  3. 3

Why did the Testament do Stalin no harm?

    Model answer

The Central Committee agreed in 1924 to suppress the document, because Lenin had criticised all of them and none wished his own verdict read aloud.

  4. 4

What powers came with the post of General Secretary?

    Model answer

The General Secretary controlled party appointments, membership records and the agenda of meetings, so Stalin could pack the party with men who owed him their careers.

  5. 5

    What was the Lenin Enrolment?

    Model answer

The Lenin Enrolment of 1924 brought several hundred thousand new working-class members into the party, most of them poorly educated and loyal to the machine that had recruited them.

  6. 6

How did Stalin turn Lenin's funeral to his advantage?

    Model answer

Stalin took the leading role at the funeral and in the cult built around Lenin's embalmed body, presenting himself as the faithful disciple while Trotsky was absent from Moscow.
