The Edelweiss Pirates were groups of working-class youths in the Rhineland and Ruhr who rejected the Hitler Youth, roamed and camped together, fought party patrols and in some cases sheltered deserters and forced labourers.

The Swing Youth were middle-class teenagers, mainly in Hamburg and Berlin, who listened and danced to English and American jazz and mocked Nazi discipline in dress and behaviour.
- 4
Describe the White Rose group.
Model answer
The White Rose was a circle of Munich students led by Hans and Sophie Scholl, with their professor Kurt Huber, who wrote and distributed leaflets denouncing the regime's crimes and calling for passive resistance.
- 5
What happened to the White Rose?
Model answer
Hans and Sophie Scholl were caught distributing leaflets in the university in February 1943, and they and their closest associates were tried and executed within days.
- 6
What did Bishop von Galen achieve in 1941?
Model answer
Galen preached publicly in Münster against the killing of the mentally and physically disabled, his sermons were copied and circulated widely, and the regime formally suspended the programme rather than risk a confrontation with Catholic opinion.
