Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Who founded the Home Rule movement, and when?
Model answer
Isaac Butt founded the Home Government Association in Dublin in 1870 and converted it into the Home Rule League in 1873.
- 2
What did Butt mean by Home Rule?
Model answer
Butt proposed a federal arrangement in which an Irish parliament would manage Irish domestic affairs while imperial questions remained at Westminster, with Ireland staying within the United Kingdom and the Empire.
- 3
Why did Butt's leadership fail?
Model answer
Butt relied on courteous parliamentary persuasion in a House of Commons where Irish members were a small minority, and his party was loosely organised and undisciplined, so his motions were simply voted down.
- 4
What was obstruction?
Model answer
Obstruction was the tactic, used by Joseph Biggar and Parnell from the mid-1870s, of using the rules of procedure to delay all Commons business until the House was forced to attend to Irish demands.
- 5
How did the party's discipline change under Parnell?
Model answer
Parnell turned a loose group of sympathisers into the Irish Parliamentary Party, imposing a written pledge in 1884 that every member would sit, act and vote with the party, and controlling both its funds and its choice of candidates.
- 6
What organisation did Parnell use in the country?
Model answer
The Irish National League, founded in 1882 to replace the suppressed Land League, became the party's constituency machine, working with the clergy to select and support candidates.
